The G2 Gallery Presents Nature LA: Sebastian Artz
April 27–May 23, 2010
Venice, CA – On Tuesday, April 27, 2010, The G2 Gallery will premiere Nature LA: Sebastian Artz. Sebastian will be presenting a series of black and white images of sea creatures.
Nature LA is an ongoing series of solo exhibitions presenting the work of Los Angeles's most compelling emerging photographers whose output is expanding the existing field of nature photography. Curated by G2 Gallery Director Jolene Hanson, each exhibit approaches a specific set of ideas regarding the natural world, explored visually through the photographer's lens.
Sebastian Artz’s contribution to Nature LA takes an abstracted view of nature through his stark, highly stylized, black and white photography. Sebastian’s subjects are deadly sea creatures—jellyfish, octopi, and sharks—rendered vulnerable through their presentation: the once-powerful octopus is reduced to an inert tangle of tentacles, while in another shot, a jellyfish languidly floats into the frame with all the ephemerality of a ghost. Sebastian’s intent is to inpire conservation through a new and alluring mode of nature photography.
An opening reception for Nature LA: Sebastian Artz will be held Friday, May 7, to coincide with the opening of Florian Schulz: The American Arctic.
About Sebastian Artz
Photographer Sebastian Artz was born in Romania, raised in Germany, and relocated to Los Angeles to further his studies in film at UCLA. It was there that Sebastian’s passion for photography resurfaced, setting him on a career path with a diverse clientele including Rolling Stone and Cosmopolitan, fashion and advertising campaigns, and musicians such as The Beastie Boys and Green Day. His personal projects often deal with the underwater world, presenting it in such a way that circumvents the obvious. He currently resides in Venice, California.
