Galen Rowell
World Famous Climber, Adventurer, Writer and
Photographer is Remembered at The G2 Gallery
Venice, CA – Beginning April 7, the G2 Gallery, in partnership with Mountain Light Photography of Bishop, CA, will be hosting a Retrospective Exhibition of the photography of Galen Rowell.
Galen Avery Rowell’s oeuvre blurs the lines between art, photojournalism, and personal record. His passion for mountain ranges and vertical spaces inspired ascents that resulted in a body of work rooted in beauty and self-discovery as much as his desire to share knowledge of rare and compromised places with the world.
Galen's emergence as a photographer came in 1974 with a National Geographic cover story, "Climbing Half Dome the Hard Way." In the years to come, Galen would make numerous contributions to the publication and publish 18 books of his own, documenting his travels and offering keen insights into the societal and environmental impact being wrought on people and lands near and far. The combined impact of Galen's photographic prowess and his bond with nature made him an ideal candidate for Outdoor Photographer, with whom he maintained a relationship as a contributing columnist for a number of years.
"Galen was compelled to capture finished images in-camera at the time of original exposure, working within the technical limitations of color slide films that were the standard for National Geographic and other clients" -- Justin Black
Having traveled the world for numerous publications, working closely on projects with individuals such as the Dalai Lama the exhibit promises an eclectic mix of images. Special events and lectures will mark the G2 calendar in celebration of Galen's accomplishments.
The exhibit runs from April 7 through May 17, 2009 with a public reception on May 1 from 6:00-9:00 pm.
