About Saving Cranes

From a low of just 15 birds in 1941, the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock of Whooping Cranes—the last naturally occurring population of Whooping Cranes in the world—has struggled to recover to its present population of 270 birds. Today, water diversions affecting the crane’s wintering grounds in the Gudalupe River basin are threatening to cripple the fledgling flock. The International Crane Foundation is working to bring awareness of the fragile ecosystem sustaining the Whooping Cranes. As pictured by photographer Mike Sloat, Saving Cranes reminds us of our interconnectivity with the environment, and how human activity can either make or break another species.
