About David Muench

An innovator in landscape photography, David has said that nature is his greatest teacher. Son of the founding father of color landscape photography Josef Muench, and father of Marc Muench, David continues to contribute to the world of photography by illustrating the beauty of land. Best known for his unique view of the American western landscape, he has presented us with the clear lakes and wild rivers of this country for more than 50 years. With the release of David's book 'Primal Forces' William Conway, former president of the Wildlife Conservation Society identified David as one of the most “prolific and sensitive recorders of a rapidly vanishing natural world” while setting the standard and raising the bar for color landscape photography. In 1975 he was commissioned to provide photographs for 33 large murals on the Lewis and Clark Expedition that hangs in the Jefferson Expansion Memorial in St. Louis. David is widely published as the primary photographer of more than 60 books and publications. David states “For me, making photographs is always a total and continuing involvement. Underlying my need for expression of a spirit of the land are certain patterns of discovery and exploration. Intense creative awareness, along with patience in waiting for dramatic forms of sun and shadow, …challenge my mind’s eye toward achieving what I like to call, a timeless moment.”
